COASTAL SAFETY GROUP CONFERENCE 2026
7 MAY 2026
PENRTIH PANTHERS
The 2026 Coastal Safety Conference brought together more than 60 delegates from across the country, with strong representation from councils, land managers and organisations contributing to coastal and aquatic public safety.
Hosted by the Coastal Safety Group, the conference provided an important opportunity to connect, share emerging practice and consider the next steps in strengthening coastal safety outcomes for our communities.
The Coastal Safety Group believes that life is better on the coast. We also recognise that coastal environments present real risks, and that councils and other land managers have a central role in understanding those risks, determining appropriate controls and maintaining effective oversight of coastal safety services.
A central message from the conference was that safer coasts depend on capable, connected and well-supported land managers making evidence-based, risk-informed decisions.
Throughout the day, presenters and delegates explored the practical challenges and opportunities facing coastal safety management, including:
the legal responsibilities and governance obligations of land managers;
the importance of reliable data in guiding service planning, resourcing and investment;
opportunities to improve beach signage and public understanding of patrolled areas;
public rescue equipment and emergency response technology;
professional lifeguard service models and local capability;
community education, water confidence and prevention beyond patrol boundaries; and
stronger collaboration across the coastal safety system.
The conference reinforced that coastal safety is not delivered by one organisation alone. It relies on land managers, lifeguards, volunteer services, emergency agencies, researchers, educators, technology providers and community organisations working together with clear roles, accessible evidence and a shared focus on public safety.
For the Coastal Safety Group, the conference also marked an important step in progressing its work to:
develop practical best-practice processes and tools for land managers;
provide collaborative opportunities for councils and relevant partners; and
advocate for stronger recognition and support for the land manager role in coastal water safety.
We thank all presenters, delegates and supporters who contributed to a constructive and forward-looking event. Particular thanks go to our conference supporters: Spectur, King & Company Solicitors, Vaikobi, APOLA and Watchtower.
